Borax to Clean Carpet
From LoveToKnow Cleaning
If you're ready to clean your carpet and looking for a natural cleanser, take a look at using borax to clean carpet. It's a natural-occurring mineral that's environmentally friendly.
About Borax
Borax has been used for years to clean laundry, and it makes a great all-purpose-cleaner. It's a popular choice for those who care about the environment, too, because it doesn't contain chlorine or phosphates. It's not only a safe cleaner but does a great job.
For Fresh Spills that Stain
Accidents happen. When you spill liquids like, wine, coffee, and juices, it's best to treat immediately. To use borax to clean carpet spills that stain, follow these steps:
- Blot with clean cloth to absorb as much of the liquid as possible. Blotting lifts the stain and helps stop it from spreading. It's import to blot. Don't rub it into the carpet.
- Spray the spot with ice water
- Sprinkle borax over the spot
- Lay a cold, wet cloth over the borax
- Use the curved side of a spoon to press the cloth and work the borax into the spot.
- Blot the spot again with a clean cloth.
- Continue this procedure until the blotting cloth shows no sign of remaining spilled liquid being drawn from the carpet.
- Spray with cold water to rinse and blot until all borax is cleaned up.
- Place several paper towels over the area and set a heavy object on them for several hours to absorb residual liquid.
- Remove the paper towels and let the area air dry before vacuuming.
Use of Borax in Steam Cleaners
When cleaning your entire carpet, borax can be used instead of a carpet shampoo.
Borax Steam Cleaner Shampoo Recipe
- Mix one gallon distilled white vinegar with one cup of borax.
- Place the borax mixture into your steam cleaner and add hot water to fill line.
Borax to Clean Carpet Stains
Borax can be used to remove stains and to spot clean your carpet, too. To do this, make a borax paste (mix with water) and rub it into the spot. Let it dry and vacuum.
For hard-to-remove stains make a paste of the following ingredients:
- ¼ cup of salt
- ¼ cup of borax
- ¼ cup of vinegar
Apply the paste mixture to the stain. In this case, rub it into the carpet fibers. Let it dry and vacuum.
Borax to Neutralize Urine Odor
If your pet has had an accident and you need to get rid of urine odor from your carpet, using a borax mixture to clean the area will not just get rid of the spot but also the smell.
Urine Odor Neutralizing Mix
Add the following to one quart of hot water:
- Two tablespoons borax
- Two tablespoons baking soda
Use the borax mixture to soak the affected carpet. Let it work for a few hours, or even overnight. Use a wet vac to remove the remaining liquid.
Borax to Get Rid of Fleas
As a pet owner, you can also use borax on your carpet to get rid of fleas.
- Vacuum carpet thoroughly
- Sprinkle borax across the carpet
- Work the borax into the carpet fibers with a broom
- Let it work for five days to a week without vacuuming
This works because the fleas eat the borax which causes dehydration, sterility and death. Fleas reproduce every three to five days. While the borax treatment kills one cycle you'll have to repeat the treatment to get the problem under control. You can expect the process to take about four to six weeks to kill all fleas. To keep the problem under control, repeat this process every month or more often if necessary. Borax is not only safe for your pets but for your whole family.
