Clean Coffee Pots with Vinegar
From LoveToKnow Cleaning
People who’d rather use natural products, especially when cleaning items that contain food or drink, have been using a simple process to clean coffee pots with vinegar for years.
Vinegar is an excellent cleaning solution since it is nontoxic, has no noxious fumes and easily rinses off with water. Plus, it is inexpensive and you most likely already have some in your kitchen pantry. It’s recommended to use white vinegar, as opposed to the apple cider or red wine varieties, for coffee pot cleaning since it is fairly colorless, which makes it good for removing the dark “coffee ring” that begins to form on the pot after regular use.
Clean Coffee Pots With Vinegar
The easiest way to clean the coffee pot with vinegar is to clean the coffee maker at the same time. However, if you wish to clean the pot only, just heat the vinegar on the stove in a pan instead of using the coffee maker. Otherwise, follow the same directions as below.
- Open the back of the coffee maker and pour in enough vinegar to fill it halfway. Fill it the rest of the way with lukewarm water. You want to end up with a 50/50 mixture in your pot.
- Put your coffee pot in the maker just like you would if you were brewing coffee. Then turn the coffee maker on. Do not use a coffee filter.
- Once your coffee pot is filled to the brim with your hot water and hot vinegar mixture, pour it back into the back of the coffee maker, or back into the pan, and go through the whole process one more time.
- Pour out the vinegar mixture and run a pot full of water through the coffee maker to remove the vinegar residue, unless you want a little added flavor in your next batch of coffee.
- Pour the coffee pot out again and fill the sink to half full with warm water. Add in one squirt of dish soap. Stir.
- Put the coffee pot in the soapy water and scrub it with a kitchen brush to remove anything the vinegar missed.
- Rinse with lukewarm water. Never rinse with cold water since the temperature change cold crack a glass coffee pot.
- Towel your coffee pot dry or run it through the dry cycle in the dishwasher.
If you find after completing all of these steps that you can still see a coffee ring in your pot, no matter how faint, you may want to try letting vinegar set in the coffee pot for 24 hours. Just pour enough vinegar in to fill it, undiluted this time. Then put the lid on it and leave it in a place where it won’t be disturbed. Scrub and rinse it the next morning. You can repeat this exercise for up to a week as needed.
More Cleaning Options
You don’t have to stop at clean coffee pots with vinegar. You can clean anything that holds coffee with a solution of white vinegar and water. This includes mugs, carafes, canisters and even coffee grinders. Just remember to rinse well when you’re done. You can also use the vinegar solution to wipe down the outside of the coffee pot. It can help to remove fingerprints and give it a little extra shine.
Eco-friendly Idea
If you’re trying to be eco-friendly, or just wallet conscious, you can pour your vinegar/water solution into a plastic container with a lid and reuse it several times. It does not require refrigeration. Just keep it in a fairly cool place, such as the pantry. Make sure to replace it when it gets too dark or soiled to be of much use, usually after three or four times completing all of the steps above.
