A Feeling of Accomplishment
Today's the day you're going to get the whole house whipped into shape. You look around and see endless jobs that need to get done. You're not even sure where to start so you just dive in. At the end of the day you look around and see piles of projects all over. It almost looks worse now than when you started. What have you accomplished? By the look of things, not much.
Sound familiar? Try it again with your house cleaning chore list.
Today you're going to get the whole house looking spin and span. You look around and wonder where to start. Then you pull out your monthly chore list. Your daily chores have already been completed and checked off, so you know you're ready to tackle the monthly projects. What's first on the list? Clean the ceiling fans. You have one hour allotted to clean all the ceiling fans in the house. Check.
By the end of the day, you look at your list and see lots of red check marks next to all the things you've gotten done. Wow! You really did a lot today! The house looks great and you feel great because you've accomplished everything on your list.
Which scene sounds better to you?
Get More Done in Less Time
When you have a house cleaning chore list, you already have your tasks outlined. You don't have to run around trying to figure out what to do next. You don't gather all the supplies to clean the bathroom only to see that someone has already taken care of it.
With a glance you can see what needs to be done and what is already finished. You can move effortlessly from one task to the next. Before you know it, everything is done and you still have half the day ahead of you. What will you do with all that extra time that you didn't waste being scatter-brained? Shopping anyone?
Delegate Tasks
Everyone is hoping for a day at the beach, but there are chores to be done first. You tell the kids, "We can go to the beach as soon as the house is clean." Mass chaos ensues. Everyone wants to vacuum but no one wants to clean the bathroom. The dishes are towered precariously in the sink and the two year old thinks he's going to wash them. At this rate, you won't make it to the beach until next summer.
A much better plan is to hand out specific chore lists to each child. They can do the chores that are best suited to their abilities, everything gets done and you can help your two year old with the dishes without worrying that it will end in disaster. Even better, you can rotate lists between children so everyone shares the responsibilities equally.
Now, where is that sun tan lotion?
