How to Organize the Craft Room

From LoveToKnow Cleaning

If you like crafting you’ve probably noticed that it can be tough to keep track of all of the supplies you need, which may lead you to wonder how to organize the craft room. The answer is actually threefold. First you consolidate; then you sort; then, finally, you store.

Consolidating

Some people work on their crafts in the craft room only, while others tend to spread their project materials all over the house. If you are one of these spreaders, now is the time to go through your home and collect everything, bringing it into the craft room. This will make it a lot easier when you need to find that pair of scissors or stick of glue. If you want to work on your projects elsewhere, that ‘s fine. Just bring your materials back to the craft room when you stop for the day.

Sorting

Once you’ve finished consolidating, it’s time to sort. First of all, pick out anything you don’t want to keep and either trash it, give it away or recycle it. Then sort the remaining items by type so that you will know what you are working with. For example, stack all of the sheets of paper together and put all of the yarn in box or basket. If you only have a few of a certain item, like thumb tacks, it is fine to group them with a similar item, such as paper clips.

Storing

Survey the piles of items and decide on the best storage options for each. You have plenty of options, including:

  • Plastic bins
  • Metal boxes or cans
  • Cardboard drawers
  • Filing cabinets
  • Wicker or plastic baskets
  • File folders
  • Paper or plastic envelopes
  • Magazine racks
  • Self sealing plastic bags

If you can, give each of your sorting stacks its own container. Note that the containers can vary in size from very large to very small.

Organize the Containers

Once you have all of your items in their storage containers you have the basic idea of how to organize the craft room. The only thing left to do is figure where to put all of these containers. If you have a crafting table with drawers, it’s a good idea to put the items that you use most often in its drawers or cubby holes so that they are easily accessible. You can put less frequently used items in the closet, on modular shelving or in cabinets that sit on the floor or mount on the wall. Label all drawers and doors so that you know what’s inside.

Helpful Hints for How to Organize the Craft Room

If you don’t have appropriate storage bins, make a stop at an organization superstore, such as the Container Store. You may be surprised at the sheer variety of organizers that are available for purchase. These additional hints can also help:

  • Put new items away as soon as you bring them into the house. Don’t give yourself a chance to misplace them or to create a pile of clutter.
  • If you like to work on your crafts somewhere besides the craft room, buy a rolling storage cart. Then you can take your items where you need them while still maintaining your organization.
  • Leave only your current project out on the table or desk, putting the materials in a tabletop organizer, such as the ones they make for office desks. If you think there’s a chance it could get damaged, stash it too away in a drawer or cabinet.
  • Take five to 10 minutes at the end of every day to put all the craft items you’ve used back in their proper places.
