Organizing Clothes Closets

From LoveToKnow Cleaning

Organizing clothes closets can help you gain more space in your home and allow you to feel a greater sense of order and structure. Gone are the days of tearing about your closet to find the perfect outfit when you take the time to clean, sort and properly store.

Making the Commitment

Perhaps the most difficult part of organizing clothes closets is just getting started. It can be a task that seems overwhelming, and this is what prevents most people from even beginning to get things straightened out. If you have children, it can seem even more taxing to think about their closets, and how you are not the only one who needs to get your clothes closet in order.

However, there are distinct advantages to organizing the place in which you store your clothes. First of all, it keeps you clothes in better condition. Cramped and cluttered spaces will wrinkle and eventually damage some fabrics, and you will fall victim to crumpled collars, squished sashes, and many other fashion faux pas simply by not having enough space. Secondly, having an organized closet will allow you to find things more easily. You will no longer have to search for that one top that compliments your favorite skirt so well, and you won’t be dealing with a avalanche of winter apparel while searching for a summer outfit.

Finally, with everything straightened out and easily accessible, you will save money each year as you won’t be purchasing things you already own. Have you ever run out to buy a white blouse, only to find you already had one at the bottom of a laundry pile? You will have spending money for other fun things like going out to dinner or the movies, and you’ll already have the perfect ensemble to wear!

Organizing Clothes Closets

So how exactly should you get started? First, set aside a weekend where you can begin and complete such a project. Think about what belongs in your closet, and what honestly does not. Any blankets, toys, travel souvenirs, jewelry, etc. should be removed so you are strictly dealing with clothes and shoes.

After you have decided what types of clothing you wish to store in your closets, count how many different types of clothes you have. Then, you might want to purchase a closet organizer that contains enough storage space to properly hold both short and long items. Most importantly, leave a percentage of free space in your closet for new things you will purchase overtime. This can be basically as much space as you can manage to set aside, but most organization experts will recommend between 10 and 20 percent.

Next, take the clothes you use at least once a week and hang them/store them at an easily reachable height where you won’t be kneeling down or reaching up high to get them. The more physical effort you must make to grab an item, you will find yourself more reluctant to properly stash it. Do what you can now to motivate yourself to remain organized.

Consider purchasing a shoe organizer. These are made out of fabric and are usually able to hang over a closet door. While customarily used for shoes, it is also great to hold seasonal accessories such as scarves, pantyhose, belts, gloves and hats. Stash these in such an organizer, and store shoes in the remaining slots of necessary.

Purchasing Organizers

While you can likely organize your closet with just your current storage, many still find it helpful to purchase quality organizers that help you get the job done. A store like Organized Living can provide you with extensive organization accessories that will ensure your closets stay neat and orderly.
